Eve Borg Bonello Calls for Global Solidarity with Iranian Protesters

PN MP Eve Borg Bonello delivered a powerful speech calling for international solidarity with the people of Iran, describing their struggle as “an existential battle between theocratic tyranny and human dignity.”
Addressing “friends from across the globe”, Borg Bonello painted a poignant image of a young girl in Tehran whose future, she argued, is threatened by systemic oppression and inequality. She stressed that human rights, democracy and freedom are not Western privileges, but universal ideals to which all people are entitled.
Referencing the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old whose killing sparked widespread protests, Borg Bonello drew parallels with her own age, underscoring the stolen potential of an entire generation. She said young Iranians are educated, capable and determined to rebuild their country on the principles of democracy, rule of law, equality and the separation of religion and state.
Quoting John F. Kennedy, she argued that governments which fear their people reveal their own weakness.
Borg Bonello urged the international community to recognise the legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people, isolate the regime, and stand firmly on the side of freedom, concluding that “the people of Iran are not asking for history’s permission, they are writing it.”
