The European Week of Sport 2026 has been launched with the theme #BeActiveYourWay, bringing a series of activities across Malta and Gozo between 23 and 30 September aimed at encouraging more people to include sport and physical activity in their daily lives.

The annual initiative promotes the idea that everyone can find their own way to become more active, regardless of age, ability or current level of physical activity.

Throughout the week, schools, communities, workplaces and sports organisations will be involved in activities designed to make exercise more accessible and encourage wider participation.

The programme was officially launched by SportMalta, which coordinates the European Week of Sport in Malta. The initiative brings together different partners to promote sport and physical activity while supporting a wider effort to create a healthier and more active society.

Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri said the Government’s ambition extends beyond the activities taking place during the week, with the aim of creating a culture where people choose to remain active throughout their lives.

“Our aim is not an active Malta for one week, but a Malta that chooses to be more active every day. Sport and physical activity are important not only for physical health, but also for mental health and quality of life,” Camilleri said.

He added that the Government will continue investing in sports facilities, strengthening grassroots initiatives and clubs, supporting coaches and reducing barriers to participation. He said that encouraging children and young people to take part in sport from an early age helps them develop discipline, commitment and skills that can benefit them throughout their lives.

National Coordinator for the European Week of Sport Rose Marie Mercieca said the initiative aims to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles through sport and physical activity. She explained that various organisations will participate between 23 and 30 September, with the week reaching its main event on Saturday 26 September at the Kirkop Sports Complex.

SportMalta will organise a range of sports disciplines and fitness activities from 17:00 onwards, followed by a musical concert. The programme is open to people of all ages and abilities and will also include activities linked to traditional sports games, highlighting Malta’s sporting heritage.

The European Week of Sport is an annual European Commission initiative launched in 2015 to promote the #BeActive message across Europe. In Malta, it is coordinated by SportMalta in collaboration with schools, local councils, workplaces, sports organisations, NGOs and other partners.
