“European Competitiveness Must Begin In The Mediterranean” – Prime Minister Robert Abela At MED9 Summit In Slovenia

At the MED9 Summit held in Portorož, Slovenia, Prime Minister Robert Abela joined other leaders from Mediterranean EU Member States, the President of the European Commission, and King Abdullah II of Jordan to discuss a shared vision for a more competitive, secure, and sustainable Europe.
During the first leaders’ session, Prime Minister Abela stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation among Mediterranean countries to ensure Europe becomes more competitive, secure, and resilient three pillars that underpin the continent’s future. “The Mediterranean is not Europe’s periphery but the main driver of its competitiveness,” Prime Minister Robert Abela stated. “In the Mediterranean region, energy costs and logistical challenges have a strong impact on the economy. We must ensure that the benefits of the Single Market reach everyone while reinforcing connectivity, trade, and skills. That is why, as a country, we believe that the Pact for the Mediterranean is a key step forward, recognising our region’s potential as a hub of growth and stability.”
Prime Minister Robert Abela added, “We began this dialogue in Malta two years ago when we discussed the Mediterranean as a centre for green energy. Today, we are building on that vision by strengthening the links between Europe’s North and South while integrating island states into the European energy grid.”
Prime Minister Robert Abela also underlined that competitiveness depends on people. “The Mediterranean should be a space where skills and talent move safely and legally. We need stronger academic cooperation, training, and pathways for talent in the digital and green sectors, while also addressing the root causes of irregular migration,” he remarked.
Concluding on the meeting, Prime Minister Robert Abela wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Met His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan during the #MED9 Summit in. We discussed the situation in the Middle East and the importance of supporting efforts towards peace and stability.”
