European Commission To Discuss “Disproportionate Burden” Of Temu Tax On Malta

Maltese MEP and Coordinator of the Petitions Commission Peter Agius says he has approved a petition to discuss the Temu Tax and its disproportionate burden on Maltese consumers in the European Parliament.
In 2026, a €3 Customs Duty and €2 Handling Fee was introduced on products coming from non-EU vendors in an attempt to reduce purchases from low cost platforms like Temu.
Maltese politicians and consumers alike criticised this decision, arguing that Malta should be exempt from these costs because island nations already have fewer local alternatives and higher import costs than mainland European countries.
With this petition being approved, Peter Agius is calling on the Commission to answer Malta’s concerns and address the “disproportionate burden on Maltese families” that the new taxes will cause.
