A major upgrade is currently under way at the Msida distribution centre, supported by a €9 million investment aimed at significantly strengthening Malta’s electricity distribution network. The project was discussed during an on site visit by the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli, together with Enemalta Executive Chairperson Inġ Ryan Fava.

The Msida Distribution Centre plays a vital role within the national electricity system, supplying power to strategic locations such as Mater Dei Hospital, the University of Malta and nearby localities including Swatar, Birkirkara and San Ġwann. Ensuring the resilience and capacity of this centre is therefore essential to maintaining reliable energy supplies in central Malta.

Minister Miriam Dalli explained that the project forms part of the Government’s long term, nine year plan to reinforce and modernise the country’s electricity distribution infrastructure. She noted that the works at Msida focus on strengthening the network while doubling its capacity, ensuring that the centre is well equipped to meet both current needs and future demand.

Enemalta Executive Chairperson Inġ Ryan Fava stated that the project is partly financed through European Union funds and involves a complete overhaul of existing infrastructure. Switchgear that is nearly 40 years old is being replaced, while 15MVA transformers are being upgraded to 30MVA units, doubling total capacity to 60MVA. Additional upgrades to 11kV, 33kV and auxiliary equipment will further enhance electricity distribution across Malta and Gozo.
