The Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Research and Innovation has announced an investment of nearly €890,000 in four local projects focused on the energy sector.

The announcement was made during the fifth in a series of thematic events on research and innovation, organised in collaboration with Xjenza Malta.

Previous events have focused on areas such as health, digital technology and nutrition.

Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti said the selected projects demonstrate how Maltese research is actively addressing global challenges while contributing to the goals of Malta Vision 2050.

He stressed that investing in innovative energy technologies is key to strengthening national energy security and improving quality of life.

He also highlighted the Government’s role in supporting local talent through continued investment in research and development.

This approach enables Maltese researchers to collaborate internationally, including through initiatives such as the SINO Malta fund, with the aim of promoting sustainability on a global scale.

The four projects presented reflect a range of innovative solutions. AIRSAVE, developed with AIMS Enterprises, uses artificial intelligence to reduce industrial energy consumption and emissions.

VACUUM, in partnership with Toly Products, introduces a seal-less vacuum mould system to improve efficiency and lower costs. HyMiCHP, created with Abertax, focuses on a micro combined heat and power system designed to deliver affordable energy to households.

ECO-Composite, a collaboration between the University of Malta and Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, aims to replace traditional plastic with sustainable materials made from natural fibres.

Researchers involved in the projects emphasised their practical impact, from improving industrial efficiency to advancing environmentally sustainable materials.

The initiatives highlight Malta’s growing role in scientific innovation, with sustainability and economic development progressing together towards a more secure future.
