€7.4 Million Investment To Strengthen AFM Capabilities & Training

An investment of around €7.4 million, co-financed through European funds, is strengthening the operational capabilities, training and technological capacity of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM).

The investment includes €4.28 million for the Mid-Life Upgrade of the AFM’s King Air aircraft and €3.2 million for a Ground Simulator Training Device. With the upgrade of the third aircraft, the entire King Air fleet has now been modernised, improving Malta’s ability to carry out surveillance, security and border control missions.

The Ground Simulator Training Device is the first flight simulator of its kind for the AFM and the only one of its kind in Malta. It provides crews with a dedicated facility where they can train, practise operational procedures and maintain the skills required to carry out missions safely and effectively.

Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield said the investment demonstrates the Government’s commitment to strengthening Malta’s security capabilities. He stressed that while modern equipment and technology are important, trained personnel remain central to operational success.

“We invest in equipment, we invest in technology, and we invest in training, but above all, we invest in people. Because it is people who bring every investment we make to life,” Minister Bedingfield said.

He added that the investment reflects Malta’s responsibilities as an island nation in the centre of the Mediterranean and as a European Union Member State. The Minister also noted that the project was among the security commitments included in the Electoral Manifesto and is being delivered during the first months of the legislature.

Minister for European Funds Keith Azzopardi Tanti said European funds have a significant impact when they are transformed into capabilities that strengthen national security. He said the investment represents not only an upgrade in technology and infrastructure, but also an investment in the people operating these systems.

AFM Commander Brigadier Clinton O’Neill said the projects demonstrate the Armed Forces’ commitment to ensuring personnel have the equipment, technology and training required to perform their duties safely and efficiently.
