Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela has announced a €6 million investment to widen access to the medication Entresto, with around 4,000 patients expected to benefit from its inclusion in the Government formulary.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve care for people living with chronic heart failure, a condition that affects thousands and significantly impacts quality of life.

Recent medical advances have enabled more effective treatments that reduce hospital admissions and alleviate symptoms, with Entresto already widely used internationally, particularly for patients who do not respond adequately to standard therapies.

The treatment is suitable for adults, adolescents and children over one year of age, and is available in three different dosages to ensure tailored care.

Prime Minister Robert Abela noted that the measure builds on previous steps, including the introduction of empagliflozin, and reflects a patient-centred approach grounded in scientific evidence.

Implementation is expected to begin gradually in the coming days, following structured eligibility criteria and prescribing protocols.

The procurement process is in its final stages, with authorities aiming to ensure safe, equitable and sustainable access to modern treatment.
