Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue and Housing Andy Ellul has unveiled this year’s programme to regenerate social housing across 13 localities in Malta and Gozo.

The initiative involves a total investment approaching €7 million and is expected to benefit more than 720 families living in over 100 social housing units.

Speaking at a press conference in Ħal Tmiem, Żejtun, Ellul said the largest project is based in Żejtun, where 16 buildings will be upgraded, helping nearly 100 families with a total investment of €882,000.

In Ħal Għaxaq, six residential blocks will undergo refurbishment, providing improvements for 54 families with an investment exceeding €600,000.

Additional projects are planned in Santa Luċija, benefiting almost 60 families, Gżira for 55 families, Kalkara for 18, and Rabat, Gozo, for 128 families. Further works are scheduled in Ħ’Attard and Ħal Luqa, while refurbishment continues on 42 buildings across Marsa, Raħal Ġdid, Marsaskala, Ta’ Xbiex, and Mosta.

Ellul highlighted that, alongside efforts to expand social housing, maintaining and upgrading existing properties is essential to ensure residents live in safe and dignified environments. “Providing quality social housing is a key part of social justice, supporting community well-being and improving residents’ lives,” he said.

The regeneration works include restoring façades, upgrading building entrances, improving infrastructure where required, and enhancing communal areas.

These efforts form part of a broader government strategy aimed at improving living conditions and strengthening communities throughout Malta and Gozo.
