€5 Million Restoration Project Completed At Valletta Jesuit Church

The Jesuit Church in Valletta, one of Malta’s most important cultural and religious heritage sites, has been brought back to life following extensive restoration works, now completed. The historic church will reopen to the public this Friday, 6 February, with a special Mass at 6.00 pm, which will also be broadcast live on TVM+.
The Minister for Culture, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, said: “These restoration works confirm our ongoing commitment to ensuring that our national heritage is not only preserved but enjoyed by today’s and future generations. Investment in the cultural sector reflects the country’s economic success and strengthens our collective memory and national identity.”

He added: “The Jesuit Church remains a powerful symbol of Malta’s cultural and religious history. This is a new chapter showing how, through collective effort, we can protect the past while building a future worthy of generations to come.”
Reverend Dr Nicholas Joseph Doublet, Rector of the Church, described the reopening as the completion of the first phase of one of Malta’s most ambitious conservation projects in recent years. He emphasised that the restoration has returned the church to a living space where architecture, art, faith and holistic formation interact coherently, reaffirming the site as a space expressing Maltese identity and cultural memory.

The restoration included walls, ceilings, stone and baluster repairs, window works, marble flooring, modernisation of electrical systems and the installation of modern safety measures.
A total of €5 million from national funds was invested, covering the roof, dome, chapels, bell tower, oratories and façades, under the supervision of the Department of Restoration and Preservation.
A dedicated foundation established in 2021 will continue to maintain the site, supported by private sponsors and public cultural entities, ensuring the church remains a living, inspirational space for the community and the nation.
