€5 Million Investment In Digital PET CT Scan System

Mater Dei Hospital has inaugurated its first PET CT scanner, marking a major step forward in the diagnosis and monitoring of cancer patients in Malta.
The launch was attended by Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela and Minister for European Funds and the Implementation of the Electoral Manifesto Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.

The new scanner is the first of two identical units being introduced at the hospital and has already begun providing services.
Funded through European support, the equipment features a modern digital semiconductor system that replaces older analogue technology and significantly improves the quality of imaging.
Minister Jo Etienne Abela highlighted the benefits for Maltese and Gozitan cancer patients, stressing the importance of accuracy in diagnosis and continuous assessment.
He stated that the new scanner is four times more precise and sensitive than the previous model and noted that it can also support obese patients. Examination time has been reduced from twenty minutes to twelve, which will allow up to twenty patients to be seen each day.

Minister Jo Etienne Abela described the investment as historic for oncology services in Malta.
Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi emphasised that the project shows how European funds are being used to modernise the health sector. He said that replacing outdated equipment and introducing advanced technologies will strengthen diagnostic services and improve patient care for many years ahead.
