€40M Investment To Strengthen Electricity Supply For 33,000 Households & Businesses

Three major infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening Malta’s electricity distribution network have been inaugurated in Naxxar, Siġġiewi and Msida through a €40 million investment co-financed by European funds.

Carried out by Enemalta, the projects form part of a wider programme to modernise and reinforce the national electricity system, improving its capacity, flexibility and resilience. Around 33,000 households and businesses across 11 localities are expected to benefit from these upgrades.
The projects were inaugurated in the presence of Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, European Funds Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti and Enemalta Executive Chairman Ryan Fava, together with representatives from the respective Local Councils.

In Naxxar, a new distribution centre equipped with two transformers and a total capacity of 60MVA has been developed. The facility will strengthen electricity supply for around 12,000 consumers in Naxxar, Għargħur and Burmarrad, while reducing pressure on the Mosta distribution centre.
In Siġġiewi, a new 60MVA distribution centre was constructed alongside approximately 70 kilometres of medium voltage cables. The project will improve supply reliability for around 12,000 consumers in Siġġiewi, Mqabba, Qrendi, Żebbuġ and Qormi.
Meanwhile, the Msida distribution centre has undergone an upgrade that doubled its capacity from 30MVA to 60MVA through the installation of two new transformers. The investment will further strengthen electricity reliability for important areas including Mater Dei Hospital, the University of Malta and surrounding communities.

Minister Miriam Dalli said the projects represent essential investment in a service relied upon daily by families and businesses, adding that stronger infrastructure is needed as electricity demand continues to grow.
Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti highlighted that European funds are being directed towards projects that improve essential services, while Ryan Fava said the investment forms part of Enemalta’s wider Nine-Year Plan to develop a stronger and more reliable electricity network.
The projects complement other ongoing upgrades across Malta and Gozo, including new distribution centres, improved substations and additional underground cables, all aimed at increasing capacity and reducing the impact of possible supply interruptions.
