€400,000 Investment Inaugurated In Malta's NPICU
Local

Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela has inaugurated a major investment aimed at strengthening care for Malta’s most vulnerable young patients, through the expansion of the Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (NPICU).

The unit, which previously consisted of 20 beds, provides high-dependency and intensive care for children from birth up to the age of three, including premature babies.

Each year, more than 400 children are treated at the facility, with numbers steadily rising. Many of the patients are newborns, some weighing as little as 500 grammes.

The €400,000 investment will see the addition of seven new neonatal intensive care units, primarily catering for premature infants, significantly boosting national capacity.

Dr Abela praised the dedication of healthcare professionals working in the unit, highlighting the use of advanced monitoring and ventilation systems to deliver high-quality care.

He said the development reflects the government’s commitment to accessible, patient-centred healthcare, with a strong emphasis on involving families throughout the care process.
