€4 Million Investment Strengthens Capacity At St Andrews Distribution Centre

A €4 million investment in the extension of the St Andrews distribution centre has strengthened Malta’s electricity network, increasing capacity and improving resilience to meet growing demand in the area. The completed project was marked by a site visit from Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, Enemalta Executive Chairman Ryan Fava and Pembroke mayor Kaylon Zammit.

The development includes the installation of a new 30MVA power transformer and the extension of switchgear to connect with both 33kV and 11kV distribution networks. Upgrades to the substation’s control system now allow for remote operation and continuous monitoring. Civil works were also carried out alongside the technical upgrades, with measures taken to minimise environmental impact and ensure safe implementation throughout the project.

Speaking during the visit, Minister Dalli emphasised the importance of continued investment in energy infrastructure to prepare Malta for future demand. She noted that the project forms part of a wider long term strategy to modernise and strengthen the electricity distribution network across Malta and Gozo, including the development of new distribution centres and the upgrading of existing systems.
Ryan Fava highlighted the technical benefits of the investment, stating that the improvements enhance network flexibility and reliability in the St Andrews area. By increasing transformer capacity and strengthening system monitoring, the network is better equipped to handle both current and future electricity loads.

Mayor Kaylon Zammit welcomed the project, noting its importance for the locality’s development. The upgraded facility is expected to play a key role in supporting Malta’s energy needs while maintaining high standards of efficiency and safety.
