The Water Services Corporation has officially signed a €33.15 million contract, excluding VAT, for the design, construction, testing, and commissioning of a major upgrade to the Iċ-Ċumnija Wastewater Treatment Plant. This investment represents a significant step forward in enhancing wastewater treatment for Malta’s northern region.

With unanimous approval from the Planning Authority secured, the project is now at the design stage. Once this phase is complete, construction works will commence in the coming months. The upgrade will feature advanced odour control systems and sound mitigation measures to ensure the plant operates in harmony with the surrounding community.

In addition, the modernised facility will increase the production of New Water, providing farmers with a reliable source of reclaimed water while reducing pressure on Malta’s natural groundwater reserves.

Water Services Corporation CEO Karl Cilia described the project as a forward-looking investment in the nation’s wastewater infrastructure. He said it would deliver a modern facility prioritising water quality, environmental protection, and community well-being, ensuring cleaner, quieter, and more efficient operations at Iċ-Ċumnija.

This project is part of WSC’s €377 million National Investment Plan, aimed at strengthening water and wastewater infrastructure across Malta and Gozo. Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli highlighted its environmental benefits, noting that higher-quality treated effluent, reduced odours, and lower noise levels protect local communities and natural habitats while supporting sustainable water reuse.

The investment also received the support of the Mellieħa Local Council and underlines WSC’s commitment to responsible operations, cleaner water, and lasting environmental stewardship.
