€202.2 Million Collected In VAT From Restaurants In 2024

Information tabled in parliament revealed that €202.2 million was generated in VAT on food establishments in 2024, taxed at a rate of 18%.
This information was revealed by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, following a question by Nationalist MP Ivan Bartolo.
Additionally, it was highlighted that last year, €234.2 million was generated through VAT, once again taxed at a rate of 18%.
Last year, the Nationalist Party highlighted their proposal of lowering the VAT rate for food establishments from 18% to 7%.
Opposition leader Alex Borg carried out a pre-budget meeting with the Association for Catering Establishments, who backed this proposal.
Lowering the VAT rate for catering spots to 7% was initially proposed as a way for the tourism industry to get back on their feet following the pandemic.
