The Government has announced that almost €2 million will be invested during 2027 to maintain and upgrade social housing estates across Malta, with 244 families set to benefit from the works.

The announcement was made as Minister for Housing and Lands Owen Bonnici visited renovation works currently underway on four social housing blocks in Gżira. The €450,000 project covers 10 entrances and 55 apartments, with works including the restoration of façades, repairs to roofs and improvements to common areas. The façade works began in July and are expected to be completed by the end of December, alongside the remaining upgrades.

Bonnici said the investment reflects the Government's commitment to providing residents with a better and more dignified living environment. He added that the nationwide maintenance programme forms part of Budget 2027.

The minister also confirmed that several Housing Authority schemes will continue into next year, including the Deposit Guarantee Scheme, Equity Sharing, New Hope and Sir Sid Darek, which help individuals and families purchase their first home. He noted that an average of one family a day became homeowners through these schemes during the past year.

Other housing assistance measures are also being extended. Around €27 million has been allocated for rental assistance schemes covering both pre-1995 and post-1995 leases, while the strengthened first-time buyers scheme is expected to receive €11.5 million next year.

More than 15,000 people benefited from Housing Authority schemes during the past year, with the number rising to 20,000 during the first nine months of this year. A further €10 million has also been allocated for grants that help people adapt their homes with accessibility improvements such as stairlifts, accessible showers and structural alterations, allowing more elderly people and persons with disabilities to continue living independently.
