€2.8 Million Investment In 3 Community Homes For Persons With Mental Health Challenges

The Ministry for Health will invest around €2.8 million over the next three years to support three community homes operated by the Suret il-Bniedem Foundation, strengthening mental health services for people living in the community.

The funding was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health, Ian Borg, during the signing of a new agreement between the National Mental Health Services and the Suret il-Bniedem Foundation.

The agreement covers Dar Imelda, Dar Franġisk and Dar Victoria, which together provide accommodation and support for up to 32 residents with mental health challenges.

The agreement marks the first Public Social Partnership of its kind to formally regulate the collaboration between the Government and the Foundation for the operation of these homes.

It aims to consolidate existing services, expand support for people requiring long term care, and promote independent living within the community while ensuring residents are treated with dignity.

Ian Borg said the partnership demonstrates the value of collaboration between Government, voluntary organisations, local communities and the private sector in strengthening mental health services across Malta and Gozo.

He added that the investment will help mental health care continue evolving while encouraging greater social inclusion.

Suret il-Bniedem Foundation Chairperson Marique Sciberras welcomed the agreement, saying it provides long term stability and allows services to continue improving.

She noted that evidence shows people with mental health challenges achieve better outcomes when they live in community based environments that meet their individual needs.

Alongside financial support, the agreement introduces a clear framework for funding, governance, transparency and accountability, helping ensure high quality residential care while safeguarding the dignity and wellbeing of every resident.
