More than €2.56 million have been invested in projects by voluntary organisations, which are expected to generate over 1.6 million kWh of clean energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 652 tonnes. This is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of more than 280 households.

The figures were announced during a recognition ceremony organised by the Energy and Water Agency for voluntary organisations that successfully completed projects under the fourth and fifth editions of the Energy and Water Efficiency Scheme.

During the event, the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli praised the growing efforts of voluntary organisations. She said the results achieved through the scheme demonstrate its success and its positive impact on organisations and their communities. She added that non-governmental organisations play an important role in building a more sustainable community, and that government support will continue to help them improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Minister for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector Julia Farrugia also highlighted the importance of voluntary organisations in society. She said they contribute to national identity and help build a more sustainable and resilient future. She noted that such organisations are central to many community initiatives and provide valuable services across Maltese society. By supporting them through these schemes, she said, government is helping improve facilities and strengthen their role within the community.

Inġinier Charles Buttigieg from the Energy and Water Agency stated that the scheme reflects the agency’s commitment to supporting voluntary organisations as they invest in sustainability. He explained that the initiative helps organisations improve efficiency, enhance service quality and reduce operating costs, allowing them to reinvest savings into their activities.

Representatives from beneficiary organisations and the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector were also present.

Voluntary organisations involved in the scheme include sports clubs, band clubs, social organisations and groups assisting vulnerable people. Projects ranged from cleaning water reservoirs to installing LED lighting, replacing inefficient kitchen and air conditioning equipment, and introducing solar water heaters and heat pump systems.

A sixth call for applications will be launched on 18 May 2026, with an information session scheduled for 5 May 2026.
