€100,000 Restoration Projects Underway To Preserve Cottonera’s Ecclesiastical Heritage

A series of restoration projects are underway in the Three Cities as part of an ongoing programme to preserve the Cottonera region’s historic and religious heritage.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with Cottonera Foundation Chairman Joe Mizzi, visited works being carried out on several ecclesiastical sites in Bormla, including major conservation interventions on key artworks and church structures.
One of the flagship projects involves the restoration of the original titular painting of the Church of Santa Tereża in Bormla, which suffered extensive damage during the Second World War after being removed for safekeeping. The €44,674 project, 75% funded through the Cottonera Foundation’s Projects and Initiatives Scheme, is expected to be completed by December 2026.
Further works are also being carried out at the Parish of the Immaculate Conception, including restoration of an 18th-century Baroque wooden cathedral, a liturgical pulpit, oratory apertures and eight frames of the “Via Matris”. This €62,540 project is also 75% co-financed and due for completion in March 2027.
Officials said the initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to safeguard cultural identity and improve community life in the Cottonera area.
