The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) has announced the launch of a new scheme titled the Intergenerational Voluntary Organisations Scheme (IVOS), with a budget of nearly €1 million. The initiative is aimed at strengthening connections between different generations through community-based projects led by the voluntary sector. Each project may apply for up to €30,000 in funding, which will be directly invested in initiatives that promote solidarity, participation, and shared intergenerational experiences.

The launch of IVOS reflects Malta’s commitment to building a more inclusive society by creating spaces for collaboration, learning, and mutual support across generations.

The scheme was officially launched by the Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering, Julia Farrugia, in the presence of the MCVS Chief Executive Officer, Mauro Pace Parascandalo.

The scheme is also aligned with the priorities of Malta Vision 2050, which identifies demographic change, social well-being, and youth empowerment as key long-term strategic challenges for the country. At the same time, it supports the objectives of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development 2026, a global initiative that highlights the essential role of volunteering in promoting inclusion, resilience, civic participation, and sustainable impact.

Minister Julia Farrugia explained that “this scheme is not merely a financial investment, but a direct investment in the social fabric of our country. Today, more than ever, we are witnessing demographic changes that require both a clear response and vision. Through IVOS, we are providing a concrete platform for young people and older generations to work hand in hand, share their experiences, and build a renewed sense of national solidarity. This is an important step in our efforts to create a more just, inclusive, and resilient society, one where no one is left behind and where the contribution of every citizen is recognised and encouraged. Through initiatives like these, we are delivering policies that place people at the centre and look towards the future with responsibility and ambition.”

Mauro Pace Parascandalo added that “this is a new scheme, and it is encouraging to see the Council continuing to strengthen its support for the voluntary sector while promoting civic engagement across different generations. We now look forward to seeing the projects that will be submitted and to beginning to experience their impact within our communities.”

As with all MCVS funding schemes, applicant organisations must be registered and compliant with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations. Further details, eligibility criteria, and application guidelines will be announced by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector in the coming weeks and will be available on vofunding.org.mt.
