€1.5 Million Investment To Strengthen Epilepsy Treatments

The Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, has announced a €1.5 million investment aimed at strengthening treatment for epilepsy, with over 4,000 people expected to benefit from free medication.
The initiative focuses on improving access to medicines for patients with drug resistant epilepsy, a condition in which seizures continue despite appropriate medical treatment.
This form of epilepsy can lead to frequent and unpredictable episodes that significantly disrupt daily life, including education, employment and overall wellbeing. It is also associated with a higher risk of injury, hospitalisation and long term complications.
As part of the investment, new medicines will be made available in both tablet and liquid forms. This ensures that treatment can be tailored to different patient needs, including children and individuals who require alternative formats.
The government stated that this measure reflects a broader commitment to providing modern and effective healthcare services.
By expanding access to treatment, the aim is to improve seizure control, reduce the strain on acute healthcare services and enhance the quality of life of patients and their families.
In addition, the government formulary will be expanded to include around 15 new medicines for epilepsy.
This development is intended to ensure more consistent and equitable access to essential treatments, reinforcing the principle that necessary medical care should be an integral part of the healthcare system rather than dependent on special provisions.
