€0.50 From Tourist Eco-Contribution To Go To Local Councils

An increase in the eco-contribution charged on tourist overnight stays in Malta has been announced.
Beginning on 1 July 2026, the fee will rise from 50 cents to €1.50 per person, per night.
According to the measure, the revised contribution forms part of broader efforts to address the growing impact of tourism on local infrastructure, public services, and the environment.
The eco-contribution is paid by visitors staying in accommodation establishments across the country and is intended to support sustainable tourism initiatives.
In addition, it was confirmed that €0.50 from every contribution collected will be allocated directly to Local Councils.
These funds will be distributed according to the level of tourism activity and its impact on each locality.
The measure aims to provide communities with greater financial resources to maintain public spaces, improve cleanliness, and strengthen local services affected by high visitor numbers.
The reform seeks to ensure that tourism continues to contribute positively to the country while also supporting residents and local communities that experience the pressures associated with increased tourist activity.
The new rates are expected to apply to all eligible tourist accommodations from the implementation date onward.
