EU Presidet Roberta Metsola Visits Son On Military Duty On Official Finland Trip
Local

Roberta Metsola is currently on an official visit to Finland, where she visited the Finnish Defence Forces.

During the visit, Metsola met her 19-year-old son Luca, who has been serving in the Finnish army since the beginning of the year as part of his obligatory national service.

While Metsola is Maltese, her children are eligible for service through their Finnish father, in line with Finland’s citizenship laws.

In Finland, the duty to defend the country is enshrined in the constitution, with mandatory military service applying to men.

Sharing a photo of the moment on social media, Metsola wrote: “Proud Mama. Proud European.”

During her trip, she also held meetings with Alexander Stubb and Petteri Orpo.

Should Malta make it mandatory for citizens to defend their country?
