EU Parliament Calls For Harsher Rules Against Abuse Of Dogs And Cats

The European Parliament calls for stronger protections against abuse between dogs and cats.
Parliament and Council negotiators agreed on mandatory microchipping and registration of all cats and dogs in the EU.
If approved, all cats and dogs in the EU will be registered in interoperable national databases. Breeders, sellers, and shelters have four years to prepare for this, while pet owners have 10 years for dogs and after 15 years for cats.
Additionally, they also called for a ban on breeding cats and dogs with excessive physical traits. This includes breeding between animals which are either parent and offspring, grandparents and grandchildren, or siblings and half-siblings.
Tying dogs or cats to an object, excluding medical reasons, or the use of prong and choke collars without built-in safety mechanisms will also be prohibited.
