A delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) has concluded a series of high-level meetings in Malta aimed at assessing the use and oversight of EU funds.

Led by Tomáš Zdechovský, the delegation held talks with Minister for European Funds, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, the EU Programmes Agency, the Internal Audit and Investigations Department, civil society organisations, and the EU Asylum Agency.

The visit focused on governance, coordination, and accountability in the management of European funds.

Zdechovský described the discussions as constructive, noting that Maltese authorities presented a largely positive outlook regarding safeguards and control mechanisms.

However, he stressed that further steps are required to ensure full compliance and transparency. He warned against risks of political misuse of funds, stating that EU resources must benefit citizens and businesses rather than a select few.

The delegation also reviewed audit practices with the national Audit Authority, gaining insight into methodologies and oversight frameworks designed to ensure proper spending.

A key part of the visit included follow-up discussions with the EU Asylum Agency, which had previously faced scrutiny after an investigation by the European Anti-Fraud Office.

While acknowledging improvements, Zdechovský emphasised the need for sustained reforms, particularly in transparency and internal procedures.

The delegation included Paulo Cunha, Dick Erixon, Peter Agius, and Evin Incir.
