Local

Contemporary Maltese artist Etienne Farrell is set to unveil Unblinking, a multidisciplinary exhibition that explores the eye as a symbol, sense, metaphor, and witness.

Taking place at the historic Church of St Mary Magdalene in Valletta from 22 to 27 June 2026, the exhibition combines sculpture, painting, and immersive installations to create a thought-provoking journey through themes of perception, observation, vulnerability, and power.

Expanding beyond the traditional gallery format, Farrell has collaborated with theatre director Patrick Vella to introduce a performative element that transforms the exhibition space into a living environment.

On three selected evenings being the 22nd, 25th, and 26th of June, all at 8:15pm, performing artists Frances Galea, Mandy Muscat, Joswe Muscat Galan, Svetlana Psaila, Bernard Zammit, and Justin Calleja will activate the installations through movement, physical expression, and live interaction, allowing the works to evolve and reveal new layers of meaning.

Drawing on cultural, historical, mythological, and spiritual references, Unblinking examines the complexities of vision and perception. The exhibition incorporates symbols such as the Eye of Horus, the Eye of God, the Third Eye, the Eye of Sauron, and the Nazar talisman, exploring the tension between clarity and illusion, protection and control.

Farrell, known for addressing social, emotional, and cultural narratives through diverse media, continues his exploration of human experience with this ambitious project. Admission is free, with the exhibition open daily from 7pm to 9.30pm.
