ERA Responds To Public Outrage Following Decision To Uproot 800 Trees From Comino Nature Reserve

Following public outrage from locals and activist groups regarding the ERA’s decision to uproot 800 trees in Comino’s nature reserve, the Authority has now released a statement in response.

Well-known activist group Moviment Graffiti stated that the ERA reportedly approved the uprooting of 800 tress to make space for 44 pools, 16 villas, and 140-room hotel in Comino’s nature reserve.

“The authority that is supposed to protect Malta’s environment just approved the uprooting of 800 trees within Comino’s nature reserve,” explained Moviment Graffiti.

“We are giving a serious warning,” they continued, “If Hili Group is going to start decimating Comino with construction works…they can expect a ferocious response.”

Today, the ERA released a statement responding to the public outcry, explaining that they have “placed an obligation on the applicant to plant 540 new indigenous trees on the island.”

“This commitment stems from an ERA condition requiring the applicant to plant 10 trees for each of the 54 protected trees that will be removed under the development permit for Comino,” continued the Authority.

“These plans, covered by the development permit for Comino, are supported by ERA’s scientific expertise as well as the findings of the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment carried out by the applicant, which examined the impacts of the project, including those on trees and vegetation,” they concluded.
