ERA Launches Public Consultation On Dwejra Geological Area

New regulations will govern Malta’s first-ever geological park at Dwejra Bay in Gozo and the surrounding environment of il-Qawra tad-Dwejra.
A public consultation on these regulations was launched during an educational walk at Dwejra Bay, attended by Ministers Miriam Dalli and Clint Camilleri, ERA CEO Kevin Mercieca, local council representatives, Eco-Gozo, schoolchildren and other stakeholders.

The Dwejra-Qawra zone in western Gozo hosts a number of important geological and geomorphological features, including coastal cliffs, stacks, the picturesque Inland Sea, valleys and reefs. The new regulations designate this area as a Site of Geological Importance and lay down rules aimed at conserving and protecting its unique landscape and natural heritage.
Under the proposed rules, the Dwejra Steering Committee will assist ERA and Eco-Gozo in implementing conservation measures. These include controlling light and noise pollution, regulating recreational activities, restricting off-roading, waste dumping, fossil collection, and managing camping and fires in sensitive areas.
Existing restrictions for mariners on light pollution will now extend inland to prevent light projections on cliffs or loud music within the terrestrial part of the protected site. Nearby vessels must switch off external lights between sunset and sunrise unless required for navigation, safety or fishing.
Fires will be prohibited in high-risk areas where habitats have been damaged in recent years.
Minister Miriam Dalli said: “Dwejra is a place of exceptional geological, ecological and cultural value, not only for Gozo but for the whole country. These regulations are about conservation and responsible enjoyment, ensuring that this unique landscape is protected for future generations. Public participation is essential to make these measures effective and inclusive.”

Minister Clint Camilleri added: “A balanced approach protects this site while allowing for responsible enjoyment. I welcome the public consultation as a key step towards transparency and sustainable management for the benefit of present and future generations.”
ERA CEO Kevin Mercieca said public submissions will help refine the regulations. The consultation is open until 3 March 2026 and further information can be found at https://era.org.mt/dwejra-protection-and-management-regulations-2026/.
