This year’s edition saw the introduction of four new categories, broadening recognition of individuals and organisations working to protect and enhance Malta’s natural and urban environment: Corporate Award for Environmental Innovation and Sustainability which was awarded to STMicroelectronics Malta, Environmental Stewardship Award which was awarded to BirdLife Malta, Green Public Leadership Award which was awarded to the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools and Green School Award which was awarded to St Dorothy’s Senior School in Ħaż-Żebbuġ.

Veteran environmental journalist Anne Zammit received the prestigious Buonamico Award, which recognises individuals whose work has made a lasting contribution to the environment. Born in 1953, Zammit has been a leading voice for conservation in Malta since moving permanently to the island in 1971. She has long been active in local NGOs, organised clean-up campaigns and launched environmental publications. For many years she also wrote a bi-weekly column for The Sunday Times of Malta, which ran until 2019 and played a major role in raising public awareness of environmental issues.

In presenting the award, the President praised ERA’s work in safeguarding Malta’s environment and highlighted the importance of engaging citizens in decision-making processes that directly affect the country’s natural and urban spaces.

The Special Recognition Award was presented to Saviour Bonnici, nature educationalist and producer of the long-running documentary series Natura Maltija – WildLife Malta. Now in its 12th year, the programme has documented rare wildlife moments from the hatching of loggerhead turtle eggs to rare sightings of the Maltese weasel and continues to serve as a valuable resource for nature education in schools.

ERA Chairman Vincent Cassar hailed the 2025 edition as a milestone, reflecting the growing breadth of contributions being made to Malta’s environmental protection.

“The variety of projects and initiatives, as well as the diversity of our awardees, confirms the many different facets of the lived experience that is the environment, and the biodiversity that ERA strives to protect,” he concluded.
