EP PRESIDENT CALLS ON IRAN TO RESPECT INTERNATIONAL LAW AND PROTECT CIVILIANS

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has issued a strong statement amid escalating tensions involving Iran, warning against further destabilisation in the Middle East and beyond.
Metsola reiterated the European Parliament’s longstanding position that the Iranian regime must dismantle what she described as its “State instruments of oppression”, end its support for proxy groups, abandon its nuclear ambitions, and allow its people to freely determine their future. She stressed that the unfolding events must not spiral into a broader conflict that could threaten the Middle East, Europe and other regions.
Describing Iran’s reported attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council countries as “inexcusable and unjustifiable”, Metsola called on the regime to refrain from any further escalation, particularly in targeting Gulf States, Israel, or European and United States nationals.
She emphasised that the European Union is in close contact with regional partners to identify a path forward that safeguards innocent lives, upholds international law and preserves regional stability. Metsola’s remarks underline growing concern within EU institutions about the risk of a wider confrontation and the implications for European security.
Her statement comes as tensions continue to mount, with European leaders urging restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
