Enemata Working 24/7 To Restore Power As Extreme Heat Leads To Unprecedented Demand

Enemalta’s engineers, technicians and contractors are working around the clock to restore electricity supply to customers affected by cable faults following unprecedented demand during the current heatwave.

Technical teams worked throughout the night restoring power in several localities and continue to operate in areas where repair works are ongoing. Where possible, alternative electricity supplies are also being provided to minimise disruption while repairs continue.

Enemalta said significant progress has already been made, with electricity supply restored in Birkirkara, Balzan, Lija, Iklin, Xemxija and Mellieħa.

Current efforts are focused on parts of Cottonera, Kalkara, Fgura and Żabbar, where several cable faults are being addressed.

The company revealed that electricity demand reached a record 713MW yesterday, significantly exceeding the previous peak of 663MW recorded in 2023.

Enemalta Executive Chairperson Ryan Fava said every available resource has been mobilised to restore supply as quickly and safely as possible.

He thanked the public for its patience and understanding, adding that teams would remain on site until the necessary works are completed.

Fava said Enemalta has sufficient electricity generation capacity to meet demand, but explained that prolonged extreme temperatures combined with unprecedented consumption placed significant pressure on parts of the distribution network.

He added that the company remains committed to its investment programme to strengthen the resilience of Malta’s electricity network. Enemalta also confirmed that additional teams are on standby to respond to any further faults.

A 24-hour helpline is available on 153, while restoring electricity supply to all affected customers remains the company’s priority.
