Enemalta Secures Long Term LNG Supply Agreement For Energy Security

Enemalta has concluded a new liquefied natural gas supply agreement with BP, securing LNG deliveries for Malta until the end of May 2027.
The agreement follows a competitive process that attracted interest from seven established international suppliers.
After a detailed commercial and technical assessment, Enemalta selected the offer considered to provide the strongest overall value and security of supply.
The contract supports the Government’s long-term strategy to safeguard electricity supplies for households and businesses.
Since the conversion of the Delimara Power Station to natural gas, Malta has moved away from heavy fuel oil, reducing local air pollution and improving the efficiency of electricity generation.
The transition remains a major milestone for the country’s energy sector.
The agreement is linked to the Title Transfer Facility index, Europe’s principal benchmark for natural gas pricing. This provides a transparent, internationally recognised mechanism that keeps procurement costs aligned with market conditions.
With global LNG prices still influenced by geopolitical tensions and conflict, the contract is intended to help Enemalta manage market risks and maintain continuity of supply.
Market forecasts indicate that European gas prices may become more stable in the coming months.
While the agreement covers supplies until May 2027, Enemalta is already working on arrangements to ensure continuity beyond that date.
The company is monitoring international energy markets to identify favourable future procurement opportunities.
The agreement complements Enemalta’s wider investment programme to strengthen Malta’s electricity infrastructure.
Recent projects have included new substations, underground cable systems and grid reinforcement works, improving resilience and flexibility while meeting rising demand.
