Works on Enemalta’s new electricity distribution centre in Siġġiewi have reached a significant milestone, with the building structure nearing completion and key electrical infrastructure now being installed.

Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, and Enemalta Executive Chairman Ing. Ryan Fava recently visited the site to review progress. The project has advanced to the installation of modern switchgear and the laying of around 70km of cables. Once completed, the 33/11kV distribution centre will be equipped with two 30MVA transformers, enhancing electricity supply for approximately 12,000 customers in Siġġiewi, Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Ħal Qormi, Mqabba, and Qrendi, while reducing the load on existing centres.

“The Siġġiewi Distribution Centre is one of three we are delivering as part of Enemalta’s nine-year plan to strengthen Malta’s electricity network and prepare for future needs,” said Minister Dalli. Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi added that the project demonstrates effective use of EU funds to improve infrastructure and support Malta’s energy transition, contributing to European Green Deal and REPowerEU objectives.

The Siġġiewi centre is part of a broader programme, alongside strategic distribution centres in Naxxar and Msida, aimed at modernising Malta’s electricity system. Ing. Fava highlighted that these projects will enhance the resilience, flexibility, and capacity of the national network, while praising the engineers, contractors, and workers driving progress across all sites.

Co-financed by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, the Siġġiewi Distribution Centre marks a major step towards a modern, reliable, and future-ready electricity infrastructure for Malta.
