The Nationalist Party has called for greater investment in Maltese farmers, livestock breeders and producers after supermarket shelves were left empty due to protests and transport disruptions in Italy.

In a statement issued earlier today, shadow ministers Toni Bezzina and Michael Piccinino said the situation highlighted Malta’s vulnerability to disruptions affecting food imports.

The party said it had long called for greater support for local farmers, livestock breeders, fishers and producers, arguing that policies were needed to help them expand production, reduce costs and remain competitive.

It also called for more support for self-employed workers, small businesses and cooperatives involved in producing, processing and distributing local products, saying they needed better access to markets and the tools to grow.

The PN argued that local food production was not only an economic issue but also a matter of national security and peace of mind for Maltese and Gozitan families.

While acknowledging that imports remain essential, the party said food security should be treated as a national priority rather than addressed only when a crisis arises.

“Investing in them means investing in our economy, in the future of small businesses and in food security for Maltese and Gozitan families,” the statement said.

Bezzina is the shadow minister for agriculture, fisheries and food supply, while Piccinino serves as shadow minister for the self-employed, small enterprises and cooperatives.
