LOCAL ELECTRICITY DEMAND REACHED RECORD 713 MEGAWATTS YESTERDAY

Electricity demand in Malta reached a new record of 713MW yesterday, significantly exceeding the previous peak of 663MW recorded in 2023, as extreme temperatures led to unprecedented pressure on parts of the electricity distribution network.

Enemalta said the combination of prolonged high temperatures and record electricity consumption placed extraordinary pressure on certain areas of the network, resulting in a number of cable faults that affected electricity supply in several localities.

The company said its engineers, technicians and contractors have been working continuously to restore power, with technical teams operating throughout the night and continuing repair works in affected areas.

Electricity supply has already been restored in Birkirkara, Balzan, Lija, Iklin, Xemxija and Mellieħa, while repair efforts remain focused on parts of Cottonera, Kalkara, Fgura and Żabbar, where several cable faults are being addressed.

Enemalta Executive Chairperson Ryan Fava said the company has sufficient electricity generation capacity to meet demand, but acknowledged the strain placed on parts of the distribution network during the intense heatwave.

He said Enemalta remains committed to its investment programme aimed at strengthening and future-proofing Malta’s electricity network to meet growing energy needs.

The company noted that areas where network reinforcement works have already been completed performed well despite the record demand, demonstrating the importance of ongoing investment.

Enemalta said additional teams remain available to respond to any further faults, while restoration works continue across affected areas.
