Election Mode Intensifies As Billboard Targeting PM By PN Hits Streets

A billboard has appeared on local roads by the Nationalist Party targeting Prime Minister Robert Abela, making reference to the recent statements by Judge Lawrence Mintoff.
‘Under oath I confirm’, the billboard reads, ‘for Dr Abela, money was more important than judicial independence.’
This makes reference to a recent letter issued by Judge Lawrence Mintoff, which accused the Prime Minister of, among other things, being more interested in money than judiciary independence.

Mintoff also accused Abela of saying Labour Party diehards would oppose chief justice nominations from any of the four judges indicated by the opposition and that he believes nominating any of the four would increase Alex Borg’s stature.
In a later video, Borg claimed that for the Prime Minister, the appointment of a new Chief Justice has become nothing more than a political game.
Meanwhile, Abela confirmed that he personally met with Judge Mintoff, saying that this is necessary.
Abela clarified that along with Minister Jonathan Attard, he had proposed that the current Chief of Justice is consulted regarding who he believes is best suited to takeover the role.
PM Robert Abela accused the Opposition of stalling the appointment of a new Chief of Justice.
“Every day I will continue reminding the leader of the Opposition that he needs to give us a yes or no for the government’s nomination,” he stated, “If he doesn’t do that, I am going to take a clear position that can be one of the diverse options which are available, but we will be taking a decision,” continued the Prime Minister.
