Elderly Maltese Couple Die In Car Accident In Sicily

An elderly Maltese couple lost their lives in a serious car accident on a Sicilian motorway on Wednesday afternoon.

The victims, a 73 year old man and his 69 year old wife, were travelling in a Toyota Yaris with Maltese number plates along the Catania to Ragusa motorway near Lentini when their vehicle collided head on with a truck at around 3pm.

According to Italian media, emergency services from Augusta, supported by the fire brigade and a helicopter ambulance, rushed to the scene. Despite efforts to reach the couple quickly, medical officers confirmed that both had died instantly upon impact.

Their bodies were later taken to the mortuary at Lentini hospital.

Radio Una Voce Vicina reported that the motorway was immediately closed in both directions while police carried out investigations.

The Toyota and the truck were both removed from the site on the instructions of the Siracusa authorities.

Officials confirmed that the victims’ relatives have been informed of the tragedy and are receiving assistance.

Couple Identified

The couple have been identified as Manuel and Doris Buhagiar.

Tributes have started pouring in for the couple, with the Malta Police Union posting a tribute to Manuel, who was an ex officer.

‘The Malta Police Union extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Ex PC 574 Manuel Buhagiar and his wife Doris, who tragically lost their lives today. Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this difficult time’, wrote the MPU.
