The national health service will now offer facilities for the freezing of egg and sperm to be used in IVF in the future.

This was revealed in a news conference by Jo Etienne Abela, Minister for Health and Active Ageing, and Rebecca Buttigieg, Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and reforms.

So far, this was available only for those with medical reasons but now it’s an option for any woman aged between 18 and 34 who would like to potentially become a parent in the future.

The Health Minister explained how fertility rates decrease as a person ages, or due to genetic conditions.

He continued to explain that this measure is aimed at people who for any reason, including their career, would like to delay having children.

“Social freezing of egg and sperm gives a greater chance to those people who wish to become parents later in their reproductive life,” stated Jo Etienne Abela, “For this reason, this measure that is in favour of life addresses the low fertility rate in our country.”

Rebecca Buttigieg, Parliamentary Secretary, stated that this procedure will strengthen family planning and reaffirmed that eventually, it should better Malta’s fertility rate.
