Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Animal Welfare Alicia Bugeja Said visited St Jeanne Antide School in Gudja together with Commissioner for Animal Welfare Elliot Magro, where they met with children aged between five and six years old as part of an educational initiative focused on animal welfare.

The visit aimed to promote awareness among children about the importance of treating animals with care and respect, while encouraging them to develop a sense of responsibility towards animals from an early age.

During the activity, the children learned about the needs of pets and the responsibilities involved in caring for an animal. They were taught that owning a pet requires commitment, including providing suitable food, a safe environment, regular veterinary care, as well as love and attention.

The students also participated in an interactive presentation tailored to their age group, where discussions and activities helped them better understand the importance of kindness and proper treatment towards animals.

The initiative formed part of activities organised during Animal Awareness Week, which aims to further promote knowledge and understanding of animal welfare among the public.

Bugeja Said highlighted the importance of education in creating a society that prioritises animal welfare. She said that initiatives aimed at children help strengthen a culture of respect towards animals by teaching them that animals are living beings that require care and responsibility throughout their lives.

Commissioner for Animal Welfare Elliot Magro said that educating children about empathy, respect and responsibility helps create a future generation that is more aware of animal needs and welfare.

Head of St Jeanne Antide School Marion Cutajar welcomed the initiative, saying that schools play an important role not only in children’s academic development but also in promoting values such as empathy and respect towards all living creatures.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to increase awareness about animal welfare and encourage a culture of responsibility and care towards animals from a young age.
