The Leader of the Opposition, Alex Borg, has called for a national productivity agenda to ensure Malta’s economic growth translates into better wages, stronger businesses and an improved quality of life.

Speaking at EY’s Annual Conference, held under the theme Future Realised 2026, Borg said that while Malta has continued to grow through an expanding workforce, this alone cannot guarantee rising living standards.

Citing EY’s analysis, he noted that real output per hour worked declined in 2025, highlighting the need for greater productivity across the economy.

Borg said Malta must invest in skills and education, support businesses in becoming more productive, improve infrastructure and strengthen competition, governance and fiscal discipline.

He added that the country should aim to create conditions where young people can live independently, businesses can invest, workers can earn better wages through improved training and families can enjoy more time together.

“Prosperity comes from productivity, confidence comes from credibility, and leadership is measured by results,” Borg said, adding that Malta must act in time to build the next chapter of its economic development.
