€72 Million Invested By The Government For Free Transport For School Children In This Scholastic Year

In a recent parliamentary question, the Minister for Education, Sports and Research, Clifton Grima, confirmed that the government will invest approximately €72 million in school transport for the 2025–2026 scholastic year.
The scheme, managed by the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, provides free transport to children in compulsory schooling and kindergarten attending State, Church, and Independent schools. Over 980 daily routes currently transport around 14,700 students, making it one of the largest government-supported initiatives for schoolchildren.
The Free School Transport Scheme is part of a broader government commitment to supporting education, fulfilling an election pledge made by former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to provide free transport for all students while also reducing traffic congestion. The service is also extended to children attending specialised programmes, including the National Sports School, the Malta Visual & Performing Arts School, alternative learning programmes, and various Learning Support and Resource Centres.
All school transport vehicles are approved and compliant with national safety standards by Transport Malta. Parents are responsible for accompanying children at pick-up and drop-off points, and applications are now being accepted online for the 2025–2026 scholastic year from 30 May to 18 July 2025.
The funding aims to ensure safe and reliable free transport for students across Malta, helping children travel to and from school efficiently while supporting accessibility and educational participation.
