Dredging Project Begins In Marsaxlokk To Improve Harbour Safety & Access

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, has announced the official start of dredging works at Marsaxlokk, marking the occasion with a site visit to observe progress first-hand.
The project is considered vital for the local fishing community and other harbour users who depend on the port for their livelihood.
Over time, sediment and debris have accumulated on the seabed, causing operational difficulties and damage to maritime infrastructure.
Through the dredging process, this built-up material will be removed and the depth of the fairway increased to around five metres, allowing safer and more efficient access for vessels entering and leaving the harbour.
Minister Bonett described the investment as a clear demonstration of the Government’s commitment to strengthening maritime infrastructure while respecting environmental standards and the needs of residents.
He noted that the works respond directly to concerns raised by fishermen and operators who had been experiencing significant challenges due to shallow seabed conditions.
He also explained that the project is being carried out by Infrastructure Malta, and that part of the dredged material will be reused to extend and restore the nearby beach at Għar Aħmar.
On her part, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said hailed the work as important, given that the work hadn’t been done in over 30 years.
She visited the works and thanked the workers, saying that their urging to have the work done has been heard and will be conducted.
Infrastructure Malta’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Ellul, confirmed that the works should be completed within the coming months, with measures in place to ensure that port operations continue uninterrupted.
The initiative supports the objectives of Vision Malta 2050, combining improved harbour access with coastal regeneration through the sustainable reuse of materials.
