Dr Jonathan Joslin Sheds Light on Emergency Response Teams Working Through New Year’s Day

Dr Jonathan Joslin, a leading consultant at the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department, has shared a powerful message on social media following a serious traffic accident in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Posting an image from a critical operation carried out at around 5am, Dr Joslin highlighted the intense efforts of the emergency department team and other involved entities, who were required to cut open vehicles to rescue individuals trapped inside following the collision. The incident occurred in challenging, thundery conditions.
Through his post, Dr Joslin sought to draw attention to the vital, often unseen work carried out by emergency professionals, while strongly underlining the importance of responsible driving. He stressed the need for motorists to avoid drinking and driving, remain cautious, and stay fully focused behind the wheel, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Earlier this year, Dr Joslin had also publicly called for the introduction of random drug and alcohol testing of motorists.
Meanwhile, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Chris Bonnett welcomed the fact that no major accidents with fatalities were reported during New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The minister thanked all entities involved in road safety efforts, emphasising that vigilance and enforcement are essential throughout the entire year, and not only during festive periods.
The Malta Police Force carried out more than 30 road checks across Malta and Gozo during the first night of 2026, stopping over 700 vehicles in total. During these inspections, officers issued more than 100 fines and brought 22 charges, while also conducting a number of breathalyser tests. Six drivers were found to be over the legal alcohol limit.
The Police Force confirmed that no major traffic accidents were reported during the night, attributing this to the combined efforts of officers on duty and the cooperation shown by motorists. Police also thanked drivers for their responsible behaviour, which contributed to a safer start to the new year.
