Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Foreign Affairs Ian Borg met members of the Maltese community living in California during a visit to the Maltese American Social Club in San Francisco.

The visit formed part of a wider programme of engagements in the United States, ahead of a series of meetings with local leaders and representatives from the artificial intelligence sector in Silicon Valley, as well as other industries, to explore potential collaboration in tourism and other areas.

Speaking at the club, Borg highlighted the important role played by Maltese organisations abroad in preserving national identity, culture and traditions, even among families who have never lived in Malta.

He praised the Maltese American Social Club for its long standing commitment to the community as it approaches its 100th anniversary, describing it as a place where Maltese heritage is celebrated and passed on from one generation to the next.

Borg said that Maltese communities abroad were built on mutual support when emigrants first settled far from home, and that these structures continue to serve an essential social role today.

During his visit, the Deputy Prime Minister also met the Mayor and councillors of Millbrae, a city twinned with Mosta and home to many Maltese and Gozitan families.
