Don’t Forget About Pets & Animals During This Weekend’s Heatwave

As temperatures continue to rise, the current heatwave can pose serious challenges not only for people but also for animals. Pets, stray animals and local wildlife all require extra care and attention to remain safe during periods of extreme heat.
Pet owners are encouraged to ensure their animals have constant access to fresh, cool drinking water and a shaded, well-ventilated area where they can rest comfortably.
Dogs should not be taken for walks during the hottest parts of the day, as hot pavements can cause painful burns to their paws.
Walks are best scheduled during the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower. Pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, even for a short period, as temperatures can rise quickly and become dangerous.
The public can also support stray animals and wildlife by leaving shallow bowls of fresh water in shaded areas outside homes, gardens or balconies. This simple action can provide vital relief for birds, cats, hedgehogs and other animals affected by the heat.
Water should be replaced regularly to ensure it remains clean and cool.
Creating shaded spaces can also help animals escape direct sunlight. A sheltered corner, plant pot or bush can provide protection during the hottest hours.
People should watch for signs of heat stress in animals, including excessive panting, weakness, tiredness, drooling or breathing difficulties. If an animal shows signs of heatstroke, veterinary assistance should be sought immediately.
By taking small precautions, everyone can help protect animals during the heatwave and ensure pets, stray animals and local wildlife remain safe, healthy and hydrated.
