A hedgehog was tragically killed after being mauled by a dog at Manoel Island, prompting a swift response from local bystanders and law enforcement.

The incident occurred when a dog attacked a hedgehog hiding in a shrub, leaving the animal severely injured. Under Maltese law (SL 549.44), hedgehogs are a protected species, and dog owners are legally required to supervise their pets and keep them on a leash in public areas, unless in designated off-leash zones.

When members of the public intervened and asked the dog’s owner to leash his pet, he reacted aggressively. Witnesses report that he threw large rocks, used abusive language, and exposed himself while threatening anyone who might call the police.

Concerned bystanders immediately contacted the Malta Ranger Unit, who advised them on the correct reporting procedures. With the hedgehog already deceased, the matter was reported directly to the Gżira Police Station.

Malta Ranger Unit wrote, “When told that the Police were on their way, he decided to expose himself and intimidate the bystanders with subtle threats.”

Malta Ranger Unit also noted, “The dog came out with a hedgehog that was heard screeching of pain just a moment before. The MRU acknowledges that the dog/breed has no blame per se, it’s the owners responsibility to keep an eye on his dog. All dogs have a hunting instinct naturally.”

Thanks to the prompt response of the Gżira Police, the man was located and taken to the station.

The Malta Ranger Unit concluded, “When NGOs, the community, and enforcement work hand in hand, we create a better and safer community.”
