Doctoral Research Project Launched To Support Visually Impaired Children

During a press conference at the University of Malta, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, announced the launch of a new doctoral research project on visual impairment, funded by the Foundation for Information Technology Accessibility (FITA).
The project will focus on visually impaired children and adolescents and their families, examining social dimensions, rights, and lived experiences.
Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti highlighted the importance of research as a tool to better understand the realities faced by persons with disabilities.
He stressed that experiences are influenced not only by the disability itself but also by social factors that can either promote inclusion or create barriers. He reminded the audience that disability is a matter of fundamental rights and that research strengthens and protects these rights.

He referred to Malta’s progress in disability rights, including the Equal Opportunities Act and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, which are now part of national law.
Guided by the National Strategy on the Rights of Persons with Disability, the State recognises the importance of research to inform inclusive public policy.
The doctoral project will be conducted under the Department of Disability Studies at the University of Malta and will complement studies such as the Malta Eye Study and the Vision Project in collaboration with the Malta Trust Foundation.
Findings are expected to identify gaps in services and support needs in education, employment, community inclusion, and independent living.
Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca of the Malta Trust Foundation emphasised that evidence-based, human rights-focused research gives a voice to visually impaired persons and their families.
Professor Anne Marie Callus highlighted how the study will inform better services, policies, and social inclusion, reinforcing Malta’s commitment to dignity, rights, and potential for all.
