Dismantling Of 31 March Plant Tanks In Birżebbuġa Approved

The Planning Authority has approved the permit application for the dismantling of the tanks at the 31 March plant in Birżebbuġa, marking a significant step in the site’s decommissioning process.
The project is being led by the Ministry for the Environment and Energy through Enemalta, under the direction of Miriam Dalli.
Minister Dalli previously oversaw the closure of the plant, which had long been used by Enemed as a fuel storage facility.
From this site, tanker lorries would depart daily to supply fuel stations across the country, with around 44 trips leaving the plant each day when it was fully operational.
After its closure, the facility entered a period of cold standby before the tanks were carefully emptied as part of the decommissioning process.
With the permit now in hand, the focus shifts to ensuring that all required safety measures are in place so that dismantling works can commence responsibly and efficiently.
In parallel, Enemalta has already dismantled the pipelines connected to the Shell jetty, which had facilitated the transfer of fuel from ships directly to the plant.
