A plot of land in Ħal Lija that could have been developed is instead being turned into an open space for the community to enjoy. Works on Ġnien Merino are progressing rapidly, transforming the area into a garden where residents can meet, relax, and enjoy the surroundings.

This was highlighted during a site visit by the Minister for the Environment, Miriam Dalli. Also present were the Project Green team, Ħal Lija Mayor Anthony Dalli, and other council members.

“This is land that is being returned to the people rather than being developed. We are delivering on our promise this area is being transformed into an open space that around 1,260 residents can reach within a ten-minute walk. While prioritising children and families, we are encouraging people to spend time outdoors and enjoy these communal spaces, where they can socialise together,” said Minister Dalli.

The garden will feature numerous trees and a reflexology path a walkway designed for relaxation. Its paths will be made of compacted soil, ensuring accessibility for both wheelchairs and pushchairs.

The project draws inspiration from the traditional lifestyle at the heart of Maltese villages, where elderly residents would gather outdoors to chat and socialise. The chosen tree species reflect the village’s historical link with citrus cultivation, while existing features of the garden will be carefully restored. The boundary wall, which previously concealed the garden, will be redesigned with a one-metre-high stone base topped by a wrought-iron fence, in a style typical of village homes within Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs). Overall, the project aims to restore and revitalise the garden as a community space that balances tradition, Maltese architectural heritage, and accessibility.

Project manager Tristjan Nikolic explained, “This land was never accessible to the public, so we’re bringing it back to life for everyone to enjoy. The works include demolishing dangerous structures, restoring features of historical value, planting new trees, and improving accessibility for people with disabilities. These tasks require careful coordination, especially when working with heritage materials. Most of the demolition is complete, and we’ve begun small excavations to prepare for the new boundary wall foundations, which will replace the old wall that hid this gem in Ħal Lija. Soon, the public will be able to appreciate the beauty of the site even from outside.”
